Cyber Security Awareness Month Top Tips

2nd October 2023

October is Cyber Security Awareness Month and hence an excellent time to remind ourselves about the importance of staying safe online whilst at work and at home. Here are some top tips to consider:

  1. Use Strong and Unique Passwords
For each of your online accounts, use strong, unique passwords. The NCSC recommend using three random words to create a password that’s difficult to crack. Also consider using a reputable password manager to generate and store complex passwords securely.

  2. Update Software Regularly
Keep all your software, including operating systems, web browsers, and applications, up to date. Software updates often include security patches that protect against vulnerabilities.

  3. Security Lock on top of Keyboard

  4. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
Whenever possible, enable 2FA for your online accounts. This adds an extra layer of security by requiring you to provide a second authentication factor, such as a one-time code from a mobile app.

  5. Be Cautious of Phishing
Be vigilant against phishing emails, messages, or calls. Don’t click on suspicious links or download attachments from unknown sources. Verify the legitimacy of requests for personal or financial information.

  6. Limit Sharing on Social Media
Be cautious about sharing personal information on social media. Cyber criminals can use this information to craft convincing phishing attacks or target you for scams.

  7. Backup Data
Regularly back up important personal data to an external device or a secure cloud service. This ensures you can recover your data in case of ransomware attacks or data loss.

  8. Lock Devices and Log Out
Always lock your computer, smartphone, or tablet when not in use. Log out of accounts, especially if using public computers or shared devices.

  9. Secure Your Wi-Fi
Change default Wi-Fi router passwords at home, use strong encryption (WPA3 is recommended), and regularly update your router firmware. Also, avoid public Wi-Fi for sensitive transactions.

  10. Educate Yourself
Stay informed about the latest cyber security threats and best practices. The NCSC offer lots of advice and guidance on how to stay safe.

  11. Encourage a Culture of Cyber Security
Help promote cyber security awareness within our workplace and communities. Encourage colleagues, friends, and family to follow best practices.

Remember that cyber security is an ongoing effort, and these tips are not limited to just one month. Incorporating these practices into your daily routine will help protect your digital life and contribute to a safer online environment for everyone.
